What are Carotenoids?

Carotenoids are natural pigments found in many fruits and vegetables that give them their bright colours, like orange carrots, red tomatoes, and yellow peppers. They are powerful antioxidants that help protect the body from damage, support healthy skin, eyes, and immune function, and may reduce the risk of diseases. Eating a diet rich in colourful fruits and vegetables helps increase carotenoid levels in the body!

What is the Skin Carotenoid Score (SCS)?

Your skin carotenoid score reflects the level of carotenoids in your body. Carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein, are powerful antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables. They play a vital role in protecting your cells from oxidative stress and promoting overall health. A higher score indicates better antioxidant protection and a stronger defence against harmful free radicals.

How is the Skin Carotenoid Score (SCS) Measured?

The Skin Carotenoid Score (SCS) is measured using the Pharmanex S3 Biophotonic Scanner, which employs multi-award-winning Raman spectroscopy — a non-invasive optical scanning technology that accurately detects carotenoid levels in the skin. Within 30 seconds, you receive a score that reflects your antioxidant status, providing a clear insight into your dietary and lifestyle habits.

How It Works:
  1. Blue Light Reflection:
The scanner emits a low-energy blue light (wavelength of 478 nanometres (nm)) onto the palm of your hand.

  2. Carotenoid Interaction:
Carotenoids in the skin absorb this light and reflect a unique green light signal (at the wavelength of 518 nm).

  3. Measurement & Calculation:
The intensity of this green light is directly proportional to the concentration of carotenoids in the skin.

  4. Score Display:
The scanner instantly provides a numerical score that reflects your overall antioxidant and carotenoid levels.

What Does Your Skin Carotenoid Score (SCS) Reveal About Your Health?

Your skin carotenoid score serves as a window into your overall well-being. Your score should fall into one of the six levels, reflecting your body’s antioxidant status and overall health.

Here’s what each level indicates:

🔴   VERY LOW (Below 20,000)
– Poor Antioxidant Levels

  • Extremely low levels of carotenoids, indicating poor dietary intake of fruits and vegetables.
  • Higher risk of oxidative stress, which can lead to weakened immunity, premature aging, and chronic diseases.
  • May be caused by poor diet, smoking, high stress, or excessive alcohol consumption.

🟠   LOW (20,000–29,000)
– Needs Improvement

  • Still low antioxidant levels, suggesting insufficient intake of carotenoid-rich foods.
  • Potential higher susceptibility to inflammation and cellular damage.
  • Likely due to unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, or high exposure to environmental toxins.

🟡   MODERATE (30,000–39,000)
– Average but Suboptimal

  • Moderate carotenoid levels, but still not optimal for strong immune defence and overall wellness.
  • Suggests occasional intake of fruits, vegetables, and antioxidant supplements.
  • To improve, increase plant-based foods, reduce processed foods, and stay active.

🟢   GOOD (40,000–49,000)
– Healthy & Balanced

  • Balanced antioxidant levels, showing a diet rich in colourful fruits, vegetables, and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Supports better immunity, healthier skin, and reduced oxidative stress.
  • Maintain by continuing a nutrient-dense diet, hydration, and regular exercise.

🔵   HIGH (50,000–59,000)
– Strong Antioxidant Protection

  • Excellent antioxidant levels, indicating a well-balanced diet and strong cellular defence.
  • Lower risk of chronic diseases, improved skin health, and better overall well-being.
  • Keep up with a nutrient-rich diet and an active lifestyle for long-term health benefits.

💙   VERY HIGH (60,000–89,000+)
– Exceptional Health & Longevity

  • Superior antioxidant protection, showing optimal nutrition, lifestyle, and cellular health.
  • Enhanced immune function, reduced aging effects, and increased disease resistance.
  • Individuals in this range regularly consume high-antioxidant foods, live an active lifestyle, and manage stress well.
